What remodels cost in California

Know the range before you talk to a contractor.

Pick your room and scope. The range starts from published national benchmarks, adjusted for California’s premium coastal markets, and is cross-checked against Los Angeles contractor guides.

Kitchen size
Scope

Cosmetic: refacing or replacing cabinets, counters, hardware, paint, lighting. Mid-range: semi-custom cabinets, quartz or granite, quality appliances, new fixtures. Gut / high-end: custom cabinetry, premium stone, layout changes.

Planning range only: not a quote and not a MaverickXL price. National benchmark × 1.15–1.35 for premium coastal California markets. Your contractor’s written estimate is the number that counts.

Per square foot: published figures vary widely. A Los Angeles kitchen guide gives $150 to $700+ per sq ft depending on scope; a Los Angeles bathroom guide gives $100 to $600; a national bathroom guide gives $80–$120 for a cosmetic refresh up to $400–$600+ for a luxury suite. Small rooms usually cost more per square foot, so total ranges are the better way to budget. Averages across all sizes and scopes are lower: Thumbtack’s Los Angeles kitchen average range is $12,471–$40,909. Sources and dates are listed below.

Cabinets$10K–$20K

Semi-custom in a Los Angeles guide; custom cabinetry goes above $25,000.

Standard packages; high-end brands can reach $30,000 or more.

Plumbing & electrical$3K–$10K

About $3,000 for the same layout, about $10,000 when fixtures move.

Line items are from one Los Angeles kitchen guide (GreatBuildz, updated September 2026) and are a guide to what moves the price, not a bid. The same guide lists a permit at about $500 for a kitchen; permit cost and rules vary by city.

Your protections under California law

Why the license matters, and what to check before you sign.

These are general California rules for home-improvement contracts. This page is not legal advice.

Check the license first

Look up any contractor’s license status and classification on the Contractors State License Board’s website before you sign. It takes a minute.

Unlicensed work is a crime, and it costs the contractor

Acting as a contractor without a license is a misdemeanor unless an exemption applies, and an unlicensed contractor generally cannot sue to collect payment. The customer may be able to recover what was paid.

Deposit is capped

A down payment may not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less. Be wary of anyone asking for more up front.

Right to cancel

Questions

Before you request estimates.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in California?
It depends on size and scope. One Los Angeles contractor guide (Alto Builders, March 2026) puts a cosmetic refresh at $15,000–$30,000, a mid-range remodel at $37,500–$75,000 and a high-end remodel at $76,000–$150,000 for a 150–200 sq ft kitchen. Another (GreatBuildz, September 2026) says Los Angeles homeowners typically spend $50,000–$75,000. Thumbtack’s Los Angeles average, across all sizes and scopes, is $12,471–$40,909 (July 2026). These are published planning figures, not quotes: your contractor’s written estimate is the number that counts.
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in California?
One Los Angeles guide (GreatBuildz, September 2026) reports $25,000–$30,000 for a hall bath, $30,000–$40,000 for a primary bath and up to about $60,000 for high-end work. National figures from Block Renovation (May 2026) are lower, about $10,000–$25,000 for a guest bath and $25,000–$50,000 for a mid-range primary bath, and the same source says premium coastal markets run 15% to 35% above the national average. Your contractor’s written estimate is the number that counts.
What does a kitchen or bathroom remodel cost per square foot in California?
Published per-square-foot figures vary widely. A Los Angeles kitchen guide gives $150 to $700+ per square foot depending on scope (Alto Builders, March 2026), a Los Angeles bathroom guide gives $100 to $600 (GreatBuildz, September 2026), and a national bathroom guide gives $80–$120 for a cosmetic refresh up to $400–$600+ for a luxury suite (Block Renovation, May 2026). Small rooms usually cost more per square foot, so total project ranges are a better way to budget.
Is MaverickXL a contractor?
No. MaverickXL is a contractor referral service. It does not bid, perform or manage construction, and it does not hold a contractor license. Your contract is directly between you and a California-licensed contractor, who is named in it with their license number, and you pay that contractor directly. This follows the guidance in the Contractors State License Board’s Fast Facts on contractor referral services.
Do I need to hire a licensed contractor?
Yes. In California it is a misdemeanor to act as a contractor without a license unless an exemption applies (Business and Professions Code §7028), and an unlicensed contractor generally cannot sue to collect payment (§7031). Check any contractor’s license at cslb.ca.gov before you sign.
How much can a contractor ask for as a down payment?
A down payment on a California home-improvement contract may not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less (Business and Professions Code §7159, as amended effective January 1, 2026). Be wary of any contractor who asks for more up front.
Can I cancel a home-improvement contract?
In most cases you have three business days to cancel, or five business days if you are a senior citizen (Business and Professions Code §7159). Exceptions apply, for example for some emergency repairs, so read your contract.
How long does a remodel take?
Published timelines vary. A national guide (Block Renovation, May 2026) gives 6–12 weeks of construction for a kitchen, 10–20 weeks including design and permits, with cabinet lead times of 8–16 weeks, and 2–12 weeks for a bathroom depending on scope. A Los Angeles guide (Alto Builders, March 2026) lists 3–6 weeks for a cosmetic kitchen refresh and 3–6 months for mid-range to major work. Your contractor sets the schedule in your written contract.
My home was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
Yes. Federal EPA rules require firms paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 to be lead-safe certified. The rule applies above 6 square feet of interior paint per room or 20 square feet outside, and window replacement or demolition of painted surfaces is always covered. Tell your contractor the age of your home.
What happens after I submit the form?
You choose your room and scope, see a planning price range, and send your contact details. We introduce you to contractors who hold an active CSLB license for that type of work. They contact you, and you compare their written estimates and decide whether to sign a contract with any of them. Submitting the form commits you to nothing.

Sources & method

How the planning range is built. Kitchen and bathroom totals start from Block Renovation’s national ranges by room size and scope (May 2026). Block states that premium coastal markets, including Los Angeles, run 15% to 35% above the national average, so the estimator multiplies the low end by 1.15 and the high end by 1.35 and rounds to the nearest $1,000. The result is compared with the Los Angeles contractor guides below, which overlap it for most scopes. Contractor guides are marketing content, not independent research. None of these figures is a quote.
